Total Number of Course Hours: 16

Course Description:
Massachusetts is moving towards the adoption of a revised fire code designed to assist local inspectors in their efforts to provide effective fire prevention measures in their community. The Department of Fire Services in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will be presenting a two-day, 16-hour seminar designed to provide local fire officials with a basic understanding of the significant changes that will occur once Massachusetts has adopted the new model fire code as a formal regulation (known as 527 CMR 1). It is anticipated that this new code will become effective on/or about January 1, 2015 as approved by the Board of Fire Prevention Regulations. In preparation for the code implementation, we are offering a program that will be presented in two separate segments. The first eight hours (Day 1) will feature an introduction to the National Fire Protection Association's fire prevention code, commonly known as NFPA 1 (2012 edition). This model code will serve as the base code for the new Massachusetts comprehensive fire safety code. Training representatives of NFPA will provide orientation to this document, as well as a basic understanding of how all NFPA codes and standards are formulated and utilized. The second segment (Day 2) of the seminar will feature instruction on the various Massachusetts specific code amendments by representatives of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the 2012 edition of NFPA 1, as well as, a copy of the Massachusetts amendments to the base code. This training is meant only to familiarize the user with a fundamental understanding of the codes general scope and layout. Students should not anticipate an in-depth discussion of the various technical aspects of fire prevention regulations during this orientation training.
